Who We Are
Dave Koch (trumpet) began playing trumpet in Detroit, Michigan. He studied under Robert Finzel, solo trumpet of the Detroit Concert Band, conducted by Leonard B. Smith. Currently, he plays in the St. Francis Brass Quintet, the Old North State Brass, and Brassissimo. Dave has had a long career in social services and now serves as Executive Director of Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, based in Raleigh.
Kathy Silbiger (trumpet & flugelhorn) retired in 2007 from leading Duke University Institute of the Arts and Duke Performances, after a 30-year career as an arts presenter/producer and instructor of Arts Management. She now spends her time volunteering, traveling, and playing trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn in such groups as Triangle Wind Ensemble, Triangle Brass Band, Trinity Brass Quintet, Conical Brass Quartet, A Touch of Brass, Duke Medicine Orchestra, Duke Symphony, and chamber music groups; she also freelances for many community performances. Three years ago she formed and continues to lead a 15-piece band--"The Rusty Pipes"-- composed of fellow residents of Croasdaile Village Retirement Community in Durham.
Mary Ruth Roth (horn) is a graduate of the Conservatory of Music at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. She plays regularly with the Durham Symphony Orchestra, Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra, Masterworks Reading Orchestra, and St. Michael Catholic Church in Cary. She has also performed with the Raleigh Symphony, Duke Symphony, Triangle Wind Ensemble, Cary Concert Band, Raleigh Concert Band, and in various community performances during the Christmas holiday season. During the day she works as a software tester in Cary.
Michal Evans (trombone) has been playing the trombone since 2000. In high school, he was a member of the Triangle Youth Brass Band from 2006-2008, as well as a member of All-District and All-State honor bands. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Music. During his time at UNC, Michal was a member of the UNC Wind Ensemble, UNC Symphony Orchestra, chamber ensembles, and enjoyed playing with UNC Opera's performance of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. He is currently a member of Triangle Wind Ensemble and Old North State Brass. Michael is also a licensed Realtor.
Chris Peffley (tuba) is a founding member of and musical director for A Touch of Brass (ATOB). With ATOB he has performed for weddings, receptions, private parties and concerts at venues including the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, Kirk of Kildaire and St. Michael Catholic Church in Cary, Brass at Bond Park in Cary, Hinnant Family Vineyards in Pine Level, Barclay Villa in Angiers, and many area retirement communities. He has also performed with the Triangle Brass Band and as principal euphoniumist with the St. Francis Brass Band in Cary. When not playing tuba or euphonium, Chris is an Assistant General Counsel at Lenovo in Morrisville, NC.
Bill Hayes (Percussion): Bill says he tried playing brass instruments once, but buzzing his lips together like that just made him sneeze! So he picked up a pair of drumsticks and never looked back. Bill received a music degree from Appalachian State University and has performed extensively throughout the southeastern United States and northern Texas. A CPA by profession, he currently resides in Raleigh and can be found most weekends playing with local jazz groups at a variety of venues. In addition, Bill serves as principal percussionist with the Triangle Wind Ensemble, is a first-call percussionist for many area churches, and freelances as a professional percussionist with many area orchestras, choruses and musical theater companies.
